Proverb a Day in May - May 6th/Chapter 6

Chapter 6 brings up the issue of Laziness. In verse 6, the example that is given is the ant. Think about the ant.

  1. The ant is punctual in his work (works without being told to) - How many Christians can that be said of today? As a pastor, it sometimes feel as if you have to push and poke some Christians just to get them to show up to worship, much less serve and work for the Lord. As a born-again believer, we should have a desire to serve God without being told.

  2. The ant is purposeful in his work - Many Christians live a purpose-less life. They go about every day never considering the greater purpose of their life, never considering tomorrow and what it may hold. Just as the ant laid up food for the winter, we should be laying up treasures in heaven.
There are many other great truths here in this chapter, but I will let some of you comment on those. Looking forward to your thoughts.

  1. As I read Chapter 6 I couldn't help but think of a loving Father cautioning his beloved child. Such practical advice, such as:
    1. Don't get caught up in others debt.(v.1)
    2. Don't be a lazy bum! (v.9-10)
    3. Don't be mischeiveous and naughty (12-15)
    4. And can't you just hear a Father saying
"I just hate it when you..." (16-19)
    5. Play with fire and you WILL get burned.
    (v.27)
    6. And finally he says listen to me,
think about what I have told
you, study my word - it will guide
    you to do right.
How vital that we study and DO what God's word tells us.

  2. People wonder how to keep away from sin (in this chapter is speaks of keeping away from "the evil woman" v. 24). The answer is in keeping God's Word. It is harder (yet not impossible) to run into sin while you are reading, studying, and meditating on God's Word.

  3. I like vs. 23 "For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:" How lost in the dark we would be without God's Light! I love it.

  4. Bro. Brad, I too like the fact that the ant is a self starter. If we are saved then we have that boldness of the Holy Spirit just to go and do what we know is right. ( see James 4:17).

Verse 19 - gives us the ability to confront head on "sowing discord" because God hates this. I have found myself in a position as a Christian to have to take a stand when someone is sowing discord among brothers and sisters. While sometimes hard to do and sometimes unpopular we know that we should be reconciled with one another and not give place to sowing discord.

Now to the end of the chapter we are blessed when we hide the word in our heart. It will lead us where we go, keep us when we sleep and talk to us when we wake up
